Allcock Aerials & Aerial-Style Centrepins

I define "Aerials" as having a free-running drum stabilised with spokes (usually 6 or 12), a centre boss with grub screw enabling end-float adjustment, instant drum release, a micro-adjustable regulating brake (but not always, and never on pre-1905 reels) and an on/off click-check. Some modern Aerial-style reels run on ball bearings, and have a one-piece machined drum instead of the traditional front and rear drum plates (or "flanges") separated by 12 pillars or "line lays".

Aerials are the centrepins of choice for many anglers and collectors because they are both elegant and practical. Therefore prices continue to rise and genuine bargains are difficult to find. Many Aerials change hands on eBay every week at "bargain" prices but buyer beware! - most have undisclosed faults which can be costly to rectify. I describe my reels as accurately as possible and welcome further enquiries. If you buy from me and are not entirely satisfied I pledge to refund the purchase price (less p&p costs) if returned safely within 7 days. If you feel I have misdescribed the reel then I will refund the postage costs as well!

I like to offer reels that are both efficient and affordable so I hope you will find an Aerial or Aerial-style reel on this page to suit your needs. Alternatively, I have a good range of other centrepins on my Non-Aerial Style Centrepins page, many of which are considered by some trotting enthusiasts to be equally practical as Aerials, albeit not as pretty! If you have trouble deciding which reel is best for you, please 'phone me to discuss your requirements.

A few words about fakes and refurbished reels... Unfortunately there are a few crooked dealers who knowingly sell fakes (or reels with major components such as back-plates replaced) as authentic and original, particularly Coxons and other rare Aerials... I am not one of those crooks!

UK delivery charges will be added when you click the "Buy Now" button.
All Aerials are sent by The Royal Mail's "Special Delivery" trackable "Next Day" service with appropriate insurance.

Unless stated otherwise, all reels on this page are authentic, run on traditional plain bearings, are ambidextrous and in good usable condition. They are listed in alphabetical order by maker or brand name...

I often have more Aerials waiting to be listed, so if you can't find what you want on this webpage, or would like some help choosing, please 'phone me...

Unnamed 41/2" Ventilated AERIAL (circa 1950's)

41/2" diameter aluminium alloy ventilated Aerial-style reel with 11/4" wide drum* and 12 hole ventilation. Aerial style centrepins were thin on the ground in the years after WWII due to the Redditch-based Allcock's/Young's Aerial tooling believed to have been lost during the war. The resulting demand for quality Aerial-style trotting reels was satisfied by several small engineering firms and individuals turning out good quality Aerial-style variants such as this one. The reason that most of these reels had no maker's name or any other identifying marks was no doubt because Allcock's still had patent and/or registered design rights on the Allcock Aerial. This particular example is fitted with lovely twin ebonite handles but other features are similar to the 1930's Allcock's Aerials such as the button-operated click-check, micro-adjustable regulating drag, 6 spokes, 12 solid brass line lays (pillars) and instant drum release latch. The action is designed for LHW - almost unheard of in those days (most pre-1970s centrepins being designed for spinning, not trotting, and were therefore factory set for RHW and were not always easy to convert to LHW). This rare example is a superb runner in very good useable condition. Highly useable. Total weight: 11oz, drum weight: 51/2 oz. A very desirable reel for carp, barbel & pike, fully serviced and ready to use. Supplied in a nice semi-rigid protective zip-up canvas reel case by Traditional Angling Products...

*Please note
My measurements for drum width refer to the actual internal width between the drum plates, and may therefore differ from the manufacturers' advertised specifications which are frequently rounded up!
