Although many of the reels listed on this page are considered to be collectable, the majority are highly usable and in some instances even more practical than the more expensive Aerial reels listed on my Aerials & Aerial-Style Centrepins page. It is also probably worth mentioning here that the best value "usable" reels will be ones that are a bit worn, wobbly or of less than perfect appearance. 4" diameter Allcock "Stirling" Nottingham Reel, also sold as Wilkes “STERLING” (see p.206 of John Stephenson's Rosewood to Revolution) painted aluminium with brass spine-back, optional click-check with flat forged steel caliper, adjustable pressure brake, BP lineguard (for right hand wind) with revolving pillar, single bone handle knob with brass counterweight opposite. A heavy duty reel advertised as a spinning & trolling reel “suitable for pike, salmon, mahseer, tiger-fish etc.” it is also suitable for heavy fly fishing. Mechanically, it is in near perfect condition, but some superficial wear and tear spoils its appearance (hence the low price).
